Terminal 1 Remodel

A new renovation project will commence this year specifically for Terminal 1. This will involve remodelling the corridors between the airport bridge and luggage carousels, as well as updating the arrivals area.

Terminal Expansion and Connectivity

Costing €3.2 million (£2.7 million), the renovation aims to merge Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to facilitate seamless travel for passengers between the two terminals. The expansion is necessary due to the nearing capacity limits of the current terminals.

The current capacity of Lanzarote Airport is set to increase from accommodating nine million passengers annually to 10 million. However, more extensive expansion plans totaling around €140 million (£119 million) are scheduled to begin in 2027.

María Teresa Cuenca, the airport’s director since July 2022, elaborated on the new renovation plans, emphasizing the enhancement of check-in, boarding, and security control areas to elevate the overall passenger experience and comfort.

Future Plans and Development

The initial phase of remodeling will focus on expanding the boarding area of Terminal 1 and integrating the commercial areas accessible to Terminal 2 passengers post-security checks.

In addition to Lanzarote Airport, Madrid Barajas Airport in Spain is also undergoing significant expansion initiatives after accommodating 61.3 million travelers in the past year, with the aim to increase to 80 million passengers.

Three terminals at Madrid Barajas Airport are slated for refurbishment at an estimated cost of €700 million (£607 million), while terminals four and five will undergo expansion costing €1.7 billion (£1.47 billion). The comprehensive project is expected to cost €2.4 billion (£2.1 billion), with construction scheduled to commence in 2031.

On a broader scale, Poland is planning to establish the largest airport in Europe with Warsaw Solidarity Airport set to commence operations by 2028. The airport aims to compete with major aviation hubs like London Heathrow and Dubai by offering extensive long-haul flight options.
