Outlander star says TV series will have a ‘different ending’ to the books

Outlander, the historical drama show that has become a popular series in recent years, will not only return to air with an additional eight episodes next year but also be renewed for another eighth and final episode.

Kathryn Busby announced the renewal of season 8 in January, this year. Enjoy the festivities how “For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion.”

Sam Heughan’s (Jamie Fraser), the lead actor of the Outlander television show, revealed the TV series will probably have a different end than the book series. This is because the ninth chapter in the Outlander original is yet to be released.

The Herald spoke to the actor who is a fan favorite. Share This Article how the team were actually meant to wrap up Outlander’s story in season 7; however, that plan changed following multiple COVID-19 delays and the decision to extend season 7 across two parts in 2023 and 2024.

“We were supposed to finish this season and I didn’t want to finish without finishing the story and that is the reason why we are going back to do one more.”

The 43-year-old star of Men in Kilts acknowledged that he “wants to finish the story, not only for myself but for the fans” adding, “It wouldn’t feel satisfactory to just end it, left in the air.”

“Having said that, Diana [Gabaldon] is still writing the 10th book and there is plenty more that we haven’t been able to cover. It will end in some form. Maybe not the way in which it ends in the book. I am pushing for a different ending, but I don’t think I am going to get what I want.”

Whilst fans of the original books will undoubtedly be anxious about the TV show deviating from its source material, Starz’s adaptation has made a habit of making a variety of creative changes down the years that have certainly improved the flow of the story across seven seasons.

Heughan is honest and admits that the audience will need to have faith in what they produce. Not everyone may be satisfied in such a scenario.

“Whatever the writers do, I guess we will find out. I don’t think it is ever going to be satisfactory for everyone, but hopefully we can get to a place where at least our Outlander is told. It won’t be the full book, but at least it’s our story and it will hopefully give some sort of finality.”

The good news is that Outlander’s success will surely continue past the eighth and final season thanks to the recently announced prequel series ‘Blood of My Blood’.

The prequel will focus on Jamie’s parents with showrunner Matthew Roberts Noting that it “is, at its heart, a love story” that “will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain.”

“The title is a nod to Jamie Fraser’s marriage vow to Claire and there will be several names and faces that Outlander fans will know and recognize. Jamie and Claire’s TV story may be coming to an end with season eight, but Diana is continuing on with their literary journey in her wonderful book series and is working diligently on book ten.”
