‘Mortal Kombat’ Sequel is Moving Forward With Simon McQuoid’s Return as Director

EXCLUSIVE: The most recent Mortal Kombat New Line has been a success at the box office and is now ready to return to the arena with a sequel. Deadline is told by sources that Simon McQuoid has been confirmed as the director of the follow-up action-adventure movie.

Mortal Kombat was McQuoid’s feature directorial debut and was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the pandemic in April 2021.

The film opened No. It opened No. 1 at box office and is among the top feature titles on HBO Max ever since its inception. Execs were quick in putting a sequel on the table and McQuoid’s return to direct was one of their first orders of business.

The film is inspired by the worldwide video game phenomenon, which was created by John Tobias (Ed Boon). The screenplay for the sequel is written by Jeremy Slater.

The 2021 pic was produced by Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Broken Road Production’s Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh. McQuoid helmed the movie from a screenplay by Greg Russo (and Dave Callaham), based on a story written by Oren Urziel and Russo. As executive producers, Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter and Victoria Palmeri as well as Michael Clear, Jeremy Stein, and Larry Kasanoff were involved.

McQuoid is a native Perther, Australia. He started his career in advertising agencies in Australia and the USA. After that, he moved to directing commercials.
