Tonight’s Univision broadcast of a match between two Mexican soccer teams turned into something far more serious. In the 62nd minutes, the match was suspended due to fights among the crowd of 30,000. As the melee spread, fans began to chase each other with weapons and families fled the scene. Images showed injured fans lying motionless amongst the combatants.
The Associated PressAnd New York TimesCite the Queretaro state agency for civil protection, which announced: “So far there is no report of deaths; 22 people injured, nine of them taken to the General Hospital and of these, two are critical. The rest are stable. It should be mentioned that all of those injured are male.”
Other possibilities exist. ReportsIt is possible that 44 people were injured, as well as deaths, but there was no conclusive evidence.
The match pitted defending Liga MX champion Atlas against Querétaro. Atlas led 1-0 at the time of fights that resulted in the cancellation of the match.
