Bryson DeChambeau’s funny exchange with crowd as they groan over Ryder Cup selection

Bryson DeChambeau has been involved in a comical exchange with fans who thought he was bottling out of the chance to drive the green at the Ryder Cup.

DeChambeau arrived at the sixth hole three up in his Sunday singles match against Sergio Garcia, and ready to take on a hole notorious for its dogleg right and a mess of bunkers throughout the right side – with the green some 358 yards from the tee.

After a brief consultation with his caddie, the ‘mad scientist’ opted to go with a three-wood, prompting groans from the home support who were geared up to watch him attempt to reach the green in one with a driver.

The big hitting DeChambeau however, was quick to reassure them by shouting “Guys I’m still going for the green, calm down

It triggered plenty of laughter from those crowded around the tee, and although the 28-year-old didn’t quite make it in one, a par-four maintained his commanding lead.

DeChambeau is one of the sport’s most divisive figures, and has already been involved in two controversial moments at Whistling Straits.

On Friday, he failed to shout ‘fore’ as his drive careered off path and struck the leg of a spectator, and then on Saturday he laid his putter on the ground in a show of annoyance after being asked to hole out from less than three feet.

However, on this occasion is humour seemed to go down well with golf fans.

The video was posted on Twitter by the official PGA Tour account and @bexcellentoday responded with:

“So into it and focused, and yet able to interact with the crowd and entertain. Could watch this guy play every day.”

@tsansom56 added: “Love the Ryder Cup because villains of the regular season become heroes.”

DeChambeau endured a nightmare Ryder Cup on his debut in Paris in three years ago, losing all three of his matches, but has fared much better this time around.

He partnered Steve Scheffler to a halve with Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton in the Friday fourball session, and in the same format on Saturday, the same American duo beat Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland to give their side an 11-5 lead going into the final day.
