Beauty Brand Posts Video of Influencer Saying Anti Asian Slur

Beauty brand Juvia’s PlaceHe has since apologized for posting a makeup tutorial in which an influencer used an anti-Asian slur.

The video was removed from the brand’s social media pages earlier this week. Maggie Carrie — an influencer and TV star with more than 405,000 Instagram followers at the time of writing — doing her makeup. When she was applying eyeliner, she said the slur “How she draws her wings.”

Juvia’s Place was criticized for publishing the video that contained the slur. Beauty fans reposted it and tagged Juvia’s Place in their posts. Representatives for Juvia’s Place and Carrie did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.

Juvia’s Place shared an apology note about the video to its Instagram story on Thursday.

“We understand a video posted on our page has a comment in it that is offensive,”The brand wrote. “Please know that we continue to be true to our mission of being a brand that represents all races, all people, and all cultures. The video has been removed. We sincerely apologize tribe.”

Carrie also appeared to post an apology to her Instagram story on Thursday, according to screenshots shared by Twitter users, though it’s since been deleted from her page.

“I sincerely apologize to anyone whom I may have offended in anyway,”According to the screenshots, she wrote. “Unknowingly, I used an insulting word to describe an attribute. My fault! I ain’t know. We learn something new everyday!”

Juvia’s place has been accused of failing to establish relationships with influencers from color in the past

Beauty fans were puzzled by the lack of reviews from Black influencers Alissa Ashley and Jackie Aina about the brand’s foundation launch in 2019.

Although they didn’t initially respond to online chatter about the lack of reviews, they eventually spoke out against it when Juvia’s Place posted a video featuring controversial influencer Jeffree star to promote the line.

Ashley posted a Twitter thread where she claimed that Chichi Eburu, founder of the brand, did not form relationships with Black influencers but instead preferred working with white creators like Star and NikkieTutorials.

Eburu finally responded to the influencers. He specifically targeted Aina by accusing her of having used shady business practices. Here’s a screenshot from an old tweet by EburuThis has been removed.

Aina continues to boycott the brand. She tweeted her opinion on Thursday about the latest controversy, writing: “I eventually had to unfollow all the influencers who still actively and heavily promote them. I still absolutely cannot believe what they did to me, unprovoked…and worse, how many creators ignored it. but it’s cool.”

Insider reached out to Aina representatives but they did not respond immediately.
