Adopted Boy sees dogs about to attack his little siblings, so he shields them with his own body

A young boy realized that the lives of his younger siblings were in danger and jumped into action. He did not hesitate to take action in the face of danger.

Elisabeth Ashmore, Peter Ashmore, and their wonderful family lived in Detroit’s west side on the 4000 block Taylor Street. Their lives were forever changed by an unlikely event on May 17, 2021. It strengthened their familial bond.

That Monday afternoon, 12-year-old Deacon Ashmore was playing outside with his siblings — two younger sisters, aged nine and seven, his five-year-old baby brother, and a neighbor’s kid. Two dogs suddenly appeared out of nowhere and interrupted the children’s play time.

Jumping into Action

Deacon was horrified to see his siblings and other children screaming in fear. He knew he had to do something. Deacon jumped in front of the dogs and ran to help the children run safely home.

Even his little sister and brother were thankful for their older brother’s protection.

A Shining Element

Elisabeth stated that her son was attacked as she was doing so. Deacon was left with serious injuries after one of the pit bulls bit his left calf. His injuries were so severe, he was able to have surgery at Detroit Children’s Hospital.

Peter Deacon’s dad stayed with him the entire time. It was expected that the young boy would fully recover, but His character was his greatest strengthBefore and after the mauling. His father recalled:

“Deacon was just asking ‘Hey daddy, is Kingston okay? Did Hensely and Coco make it back in the house okay? Is mommy okay?’ Here he is with a serious injury and all he can do is think about other people. That just speaks volumes about the kind of young man he’s becoming.”

The Boy’s Reaction

Deacon was a gifted artist and was adopted as a BabyHis adoptive parents Elisabeth, and Peter loved him dearly. As his leg injuries healed, he had to use crutches to move around — an ordeal that could have dulled anyone’s spirits but didn’t shake Deacon.

The boy was able to recover at home and received the best wishes of his sixth-grade teachers, classmates, and family in the form a large card. Even his Little brother and sister were so gratefulFor their older brother, Deacon. Deacon expressed:

“[I’m] pretty glad that [I was the one who was attacked]. Because if it was them, they would’ve been more injured than me.”

A loving brother

Elisabeth expressed pride in her older son’s selflessness and bravery, and didn’t surprise that he would sacrifice his own life to save his siblings. Deacon was a hero and set an example for others, but he refused to take credit. Elisabeth Telled PEOPLE:

“That’s just the kind of kid he is. Since day one, he’ll do anything and everything for his siblings. He loves them fiercely.”

Truly Selfless

Elisabeth was concerned about her son’s recovery but couldn’t stop singing praises to her sweet Deacon. “He’s just got the best heart. He’s the best kid,” AdditionalThe proud mother. Even with all the events, the Ashmores shared their pride in having a son who was concerned about his siblings. Peter stated:

“He continuously puts other people in front of himself and that’s what I love and respect about him. It’s something so many people can learn from.”

Supporting the Family

A member of the Ashmores church set up a crowdfunding page to solicit donations from the public. More than $39,900 had been raised by people as of November 10, 2022. This is more than the $30,000 goal. Clete Bontrager SubmittedOn the page:

Deacon, an instinctive, but loving and concerned for his baby siblings and brother, had acted. He didn’t consider him a hero. “He thinks anybody would have done that,” ExplainedHis mother Elisabeth.
