What is the TikTok 30-day gallon water challenge and is it dangerous?

TikTok’s nature is unpredictable. There are always new trends and challenges. Some are more dangerous than others.

Participants attempt to drink a gallon of water per day for 30 consecutive days, despite obvious health risks.

This trend is true to its name, but a gallon water works out at roughly 4.5 litres. That’s more than twice the recommended water intake of the NHS.

The challenge participants claim they have more energy, are glowing, and their skin is clear. But, the obvious drawback is that you will always need to use the bathroom.

Other long-term issues include electrolyte flushing and ‘hyperhydration’ or ‘water poisoning. This can lead to fatigue, disorientation and nausea.

Hyponatremia can also occur when sodium levels are below 135 mg/litre. Water intoxication can result in seizures, brain damage or death, at its most severe.

However, the gallon of water that you drink as part or your food also counts towards this challenge. So if you’re taking part in the challenge, please be vigilant and act sensibly.
