“We weren’t really interested in Dahmer the monster and what made the monster,”Murphy spoke at a press conference held Saturday at Netflix headquarters. “It was [about] who was complicit in making the monster. There were many, many different things involved in that. It was a complicated human story … it tackled systemic racism, homophobia. We were always thinking of the victims.”
Murphy think the limited series has been so popular — he said that sometime in the next week, one billion hours will have been streamed by viewers — because “the world is such a dark place”People require a place to call home. “put their anxiety.”
“I think since Covid, people are really interested in mental health,” continued Murphy. “Every character has a moment talking about people are very interested in that idea.”
Murphy repeated what he said at Thursday’s SAG event. Murphy stated that his team spent a lot time researching the serial killer. “did our due diligence”Reach out to 20 family members and friends of the victims. “We didn’t hear back,”He said it simply.
Murphy was joined at this press conference by Richard Jenkins, Evan Peters, and Niecy Nah. Netflix staff organized and asked questions to critics and reporters. Murphy did not address the backlash from the victims’ families, who have said publicly that they never heard from his team.
“We were desperate to get other input,”Murphy spoke about the research process. “We relied heavily on several sources.”
Peters plays the role of Dahmer, a serial killer. This ten-part series is told mostly from the perspective the victims. It dives into the incompetence and apathy of the police that allowed the Wisconsin native on a multiyear killing spree. The series depicts at least 10 instances in which Dahmer almost was captured, but was ultimately released.
Murphy and Ian Brennan created the series and executive produce it alongside Alexis Martin Woodall and Eric Kovtun. Janet Mock and Carl Franklin also produced it.
