Waukesha Christmas Parade: An SUV turns into Spectators

Waukesha in Wisconsin mourns the loss of many bystanders. On Sunday evening, a red SUV drove through a Christmas parade. Over 20 people were injured.

At 4:39 PM local time, the vehicle drove past the barricades and headed westbound on Main Street. This was confirmed by Dan Thomspon, police chief, at a press conference. The number of losses is not possible to be shared as law enforcement continues to notify next of kin.

Police have taken a person of interest into custody. They are not looking for the vehicle that was involved in the tragedy. At this point, it is not known if terrorist acts were involved. On Monday, at 1 p.m., a second update will be provided to the media.

“Today we experienced an awful, senseless tragedy,”Shawn Reilly from Waukesha, the Mayor of Waukesha, participated in the parade as it began. “Today our community faced horror and tragedy in what should’ve been a community celebration. I’m deeply saddened to know that so many in our community went to a parade but ended up dealing with injury and heartache. My heart goes out to all those affected by this senseless act.”

Police ask local residents to avoid the area as roads will remain closed for at least one night.

Waukesha North has a family reception area for those who are looking for their loved ones who took part in the parade but have yet to be found. Information for concerned individuals outside Waukesha will be given by telephone at (262) 5548-7122.
