Was Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon inspired by Star Wars or a book?

Rebel Moon was the latest Zack Snyder’s project. But is it based on Star Wars or a novel?

Zack Snyder’s latest sci-fi project, Rebel Moon, is set to be released in 2020. In the teaser trailer, the film promises to rival Star Wars with its scale and themes.

Rebel Moon plot and release date

Rebel Moon is set to be released in two parts, the first of which – A Child of Fire, will be exploding onto Netflix on December 22, 2023, while the second – The Scargiver, will be landing on April 19, 2024.

This epic space opera follows the adventures of Kora, played by Sofia Boutella. Kora begins as an outsider who lives in a colony with a peaceful atmosphere.

However, Kora’s quiet life in the harmonious colony is brought to a sudden end when the tyrannical ruling force of the galaxy, the Imperium of the Mother World, descends on the once-tranquil moon.

Kora, whose newfound home is threatened, must go into space to gather a group of warriors consisting of insurgents, peasants and outsiders who will fight against the hostile invaders.

Does Rebel Moon have a basis in a novel?

Rebel Moon was not inspired by a book.

Bruce Bethke wrote a novel called Rebel Moon but these two stories have nothing in common.

Zack Snyder is the writer and director of this film.

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum after the teaser trailer was released, Snyder Discussed some of the sources for inspiration Behind the sci-fi megahit.

“I have a love of ‘putting-the-team-together’ movies. It’s a problem. There’s got to be a support group somewhere for team-building movies,” he jokingly began. “I loved when I was growing up my dad [would show me] The Dirty Dozen, and The Magnificent seven. Even before I saw Seven Samurai, I saw The Magnificent Seven.”

“So I’ve always loved this idea of these underdog teams going against impossible odds,” Snyder continued. “Even in college, when they would ask us what kind of a movie we were going to make when we got out of school, I said, ‘I’m going to make a space team-building underdog movie.’ And so it went on to the back burner for a long time.”

Star Wars was the inspiration for this idea

Zack Snyder recently spoke with Empire magazine about his upcoming movie. revealed It is believed that this sci-fi project began as an idea for a Star Wars film.

“It was Seven Samurai in space,” he said. “And a Star Wars movie was my original concept for it. I was aware that George Lucas’s origins were a Star Wars movie. [Lucas] were a lot of those Kurosawa films.”

“The sale [of Lucasfilm to Disney] had just happened,” continued the writer-director. “There was that window where, you know, who knows what’s possible? I was like, ‘I don’t want any of your [existing Star Wars] characters. I don’t want to do anything with any known characters, I just want to do my own thing on the side.’ And originally I was like, ‘It should be rated R!’ That was almost a non-starter.”

A decade after first suggesting the idea, the space opera project has since morphed into what is now Rebel Moon, although some of the Star Wars inspiration still remains as can be seen with Nemesis’s glowing red swords.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire Will arrive on Netflix on December 22, 2023, and will be followed by Part Two – The Scargiver on April 19, 2024.
