Has Undead Murder Farce been renewed for season 2 and why might it be several years before we hear of a release date for the anime?
With arguably the best opening theme song on the 2023 Summer anime slate and a unique cast of entertaining characters, Undead Murder Farce has been the dark horse of the recent broadcast. Now, as fans countdown to the episode 13 finale, many are curious as to what the renewal status of the Undead Murder Farce anime is – here is everything to know so far.
Undead Murder Farce season 2 renewal status
Ahead of the episode 13 finale, Undead Murder Farce has not yet been publicly renewed for season 2 by Studio Lapin Track, the production team behind the hit anime adaptation.
Modern anime renewals typically come down to two factors: the availability of source material from an original light novel or manga series, and the popularity of the wider franchise.
The good news is that Undead Murder Farce should prove popular enough to merit a second season going into production. The fantasy drama series has not been able to achieve top spot on any user-based feedback websites over the course of the 2023 Summer anime slate. However, scores for the anime have been above average across the board with a dedicated fanbase sharing positive reactions on social media every week.
Ahead of the episode 13 finale, Undead Murder Farce is scoring an impressive 7.89/10 on MyAnimeList, 7.6/10 on IMDB, 77% on Anilist, and 4/5 on Anime Planet. This makes the misadventures of Aya Rindo and Tsugaru Shinuchi the second-highest-scoring series from Studio Lapin Track so far – only behind Wotakoi’s OVA by a couple of points.
Unfortunately, it might be several years before we see Undead Murder Farce return for a second season because of the other dependency in modern anime renewals: source material.
Whilst both the original light novel series and subsequent manga adaptation are still ongoing (both versions released new volumes in 2023), the series is still in its early years and only has a limited amount of source material available right now: four novel volumes, and seven manga volumes.
Studio Lapin Track might have to wait for more content from the original series to be published in Japan before production can start on a potential second season, since studios taking the reigns and developing an original story remains a rarity.
Based on the production cycle from season 1 and the rate at which new content is being published from the novel and manga series in Japan, fans might not see Undead Murder Farce debut until late-2024, if not mid-2025.
