This Is What Really Causes Cysts

Harvard Health notes a few of the most prevalent types of cysts. The epidermoid cysts are the most common type found on skin. Epidermoid cysts are formed when skin cells from the surface of the skin move deeper beneath the skin and multiply. Sebaceous cysts are formed when the sebum-producing glands in our skin become blocked.

A second type of cyst can be found on the wrists. It is not well understood. According to theMayo Clinic, no one knows the cause of this cyst — known as a ganglion cyst. Ganglion cysts often look like small water balloons. Although the cause of ganglion cysts is unknown, it is well-known that people who have suffered a tendon or joint injury in their wrists or those with osteoarthritis (a common type of arthritis) are more at risk.

The knee can also be affected by cysts.Cedars Sinai explained that a cyst found on the knee — known as a Baker cyst, a popliteal cyst, or a popliteal synovial cyst — is usually a result of a knee injury or a knee disorder and “causes extra synovial fluid to leak into the extra space behind the knee.”
