Yesterday afternoon, the Health Secretary informed the Commons that there had been six confirmed cases in Scotland and five in England.

“We anticipate cases to increase over the next days.

“The world is witnessing a new variant of the virus – reports have been made in Austria, Belgium and Germany as well as in Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands.

This variant could have given the virus more legs in this race between virus and vaccines.

“Our strategy is to buy time and strengthen defences while scientists learn more.”

Jenny Harries, chief of the UK Health Security Agency said that there were 10 more “highly likely” cases.

“Vaccination is critical to help us bolster our defences against this new variant – please get your first, second or booster jab without delay.

“It is very likely that we will find more cases over the coming days as we are seeing in other countries globally and as we increase case detection through focussed contact tracing. That’s why it’s critical that anyone with COVID-19 symptoms isolates and gets a PCR test immediately.”
