The Director of ‘King Richard’ explains How Will Smith Got Stardom

Reinaldo MarcusGreen has only made two feature films, but he is an expert on fathers who have big dreams for their children. That’s how he managed to get Will Smith into his corner and become the director of “King Richard.”

Smith plays Richard Williams, the father and prodigy of Serena Williams and Venus Williams in the Oscar-nominated movie. We follow Williams as the unconventional teaching methods and relentless hustle he employs to get then-teenagers Venus and Serena (played respectively by Saniya Sidney and Demi Singleton) noticed by tennis professionals and eventually turn them into greats.

This biopic needed someone who could be there and not feel overwhelmed by Smith’s next offering. But also, one who understood the story of an athlete with an unrelenting dad.

“It may be hard to imagine, but there’s more than one Richard Williams in the world,”Green shared his concerns with Insider.

Green, now 39, wanted to play Major League Baseball before he started making movies. Or at least that was his father’s goal.

Green and Rashaad spent most of their childhood playing or watching baseball. It was more than a hobby, it was a profession.

“In his mind, he really thought we had it,”Green spoke out about his father’s belief that his sons could become professional athletes.

“He took us to travel baseball, he never missed a game, and I played thousands of games in my life,”Green stated. “Despite us growing up in a single-parent household, my father was there for everything.”

Reinaldo was able to go further than Rashaad in his baseball career, having had two pro-baseball tryouts but not being signed by anyone. He was also forced to give up his baseball career when he realized he would not make it to the MLB.

Reinaldo was following his baseball dreams. Rashaad shifted to storytelling. His debut movie, which he made in 2011, earned him recognition in independent film circles. “Gun Hill Road.”Alongside him was Reinaldo, his little brother who took in everything that his brother did on set.

“He’s the real filmmaker in the family,”Reinaldo spoke of his brother.

Green started making his own films eventually. His 2018 indie “Monsters and Men,”The Sundance Film Festival awarded a special jury prize to Anthony Ramos and John David Washington for their film, which starred John David Washington.

He was in between movies when the gift was given to him. “King Richard” script.

“I was slipped the script by four different people on the same day,”Green stated. “I was like, this script is dope. It had that ‘Rocky’ feel, but it was also character driven.”

Green was already making commitments to make this happen. “Joe Bell,”The Mark Wahlberg-starring indie came out this summer. Green felt that he had missed the opportunity to be in the “King Richard”The producers wanted to film the movie at the same time that he was shooting. “Joe Bell.”

Green was on his way to shoot the photo that day. “Joe Bell,”The “King Richard”Producers called to inform him that things had changed and the original director has resigned. The movie would not be made until then. “Joe Bell” wrapped.

Green was flying to LA for Will Smith’s meeting one week after wrapping Wahlberg’s movie.

“When I met Will we just had a conversation,”He stated. “I didn’t go in with a pitch, he hears pitches all day long. I said, ‘Yo, Richard Williams is my dad,’ like that. And we had a conversation about fathers and growing up in sports.”

Green says he was unsure how the meeting went because Smith kept a poker face all through. Green wondered if Smith’s strategy had backfired.

But, he received the call from Smith’s producers days after the meeting that Smith loved him. He was soon signed by the studio to direct the movie.

“King Richard”Smith’s Oscar-worthy performance as a father with a past of trouble, who now dedicates his life to helping his family get out of Compton, California’s violent streets, is the catalyst for this film.

Green is currently filming an HBO series starring Jon Bernthal and has just three movies to his credit. “We Own This City,”Has risen to the top of Hollywood and is now a trusted director who his peers support.

Green recalls were used before the shooting “King Richard”He went to the movies along with Robert Elswit, his cinematographer (Oscar-winning Director of Photography). “There Will Be Blood”). They bumped into each other in the middle of the movie. “Moonlight”Barry Jenkins, director.

“Barry saw me with Robert, realized we were working together, and said to me: ‘Don’t fuck it up,'”Green is recalled. “Then at Telluride this year, where we premiered ‘King Richard,’ Barry was at my screening and he was like, ‘You delivered.'”
