Scream Director Talks About Star Wars Alum Who Nearly Made A Clever Cameo in the Film

When ScreamThe 1996 sleeper hit, Ghostface redefined the horror franchise’s approach to pop culture. The creators of Ghostface have created a complex, rich, and sometimes mind-bending meta-world in which Ghostface can unleash havoc. They did this by infusing every film with real-world movie trivia, as well as tongue-in-cheek cameos. The latest installment of this series. Scream, continued this legacy with its exploration of fan culture – and that meant more fun cultural references. One such nod was almost as far as it got with the inclusion of a cameo appearance from a polarizing Star Wars alum.

Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson were the screenwriters for the 1997 sequel. a movie-within-the-movie, StabBased on the horrors the characters experienced in the first film, the movie “The Other Side of the Mirror” was created. In subsequent movies, we saw the fake feature take on a life of its own, becoming an increasingly disappointing franchise – which was, in itself, a clever way to poke fun at the real-life film series in which it exists.

StabIt continues to play a significant role in the fictional universe. The latest installment is now available. Fans online NotHappyAbout where the franchise is headed, particularly Stab 8, which – we learn – was helmed by Star Wars: The Last JediRian Johnson is the director of this eighth installment in the saga. While he’s referenced in the dialogue, it turns out the original plan was for Johnson to make a cameo. One of Scream’s directors, Tyler Gillett, told Variety why that didn’t happen:

We were interested in a fake. ‘ET’/’Extra’ press junket thing with him. He was away making ‘Knives Out 2.’He had more fish to fry than us. ‘Scream’ sequel.

Working on your sequel to your hugely popular dark comedy is a valid reason to skip a high-profile appearance. Although I now know what could have happened, I wish Rian Johnson could have been there in what would have been a funny and meta moment.

Even without that cameo the movie still delivered plenty of entertainment for pop culture fans. There were Legacy characters surprise guests Easter eggs from classic horror franchises. The film’s name was given with a self-referential nod ScreamInstead of Scream 5Variety told them that they had the opportunity to film, which Matt Bettinelli Olpin co-director said gave them the chance. “use the movie to look at the movie.”

The movie was a success because of all these elements, as well as Rian Johnson being an unpopular director.
