Paul Haggis is Released in Italy from Detention for Allegated Rape

A judge ordered Paul Haggis to be released from detention at his hotel in Italy on Monday, while authorities continue to investigate allegations he raped a woman — allegations he has denied — according to Reuters.

“Our request to revoke house arrest was accepted by the judge without further measures, so Mr. Haggis is free,” Michele Laforgia, Haggis’ lawyer, told The media outletHe said that he didn’t know if the director wanted it to leave Italy.

Previously, on June 19, the judge in the case — Vilma Gilli — had ordered the “Crash”Director will remain under house arrest until he appears in court to admit to raping the woman more than two days ago. His lawyer told the media at the time that his client’s relations with the woman were “totally consensual,” per Reuters.

According to reports, the woman was seen to be in a corner, barely speaking when Haggis found her at the airport.

Haggis was not the first to be accused of sexual misconduct. Four women made allegations against Haggis, one of them from New York. She has been seeking a trial date ever since 2017. A judge has set an Oct. 11 trial date.
