Oscar-nominated ‘CODA’ is headed back to theaters with free tickets

“CODA” is harmonizing back to the big screen.

Fresh off earning three Oscar nominations for best picture, adapted screenplay and supporting actor (Troy Kotsur), the crowd-pleasing film is coming back to theaters in major cities across the U.S. for a limited time.

Tickets will be free of charge for the movie, which is currently streaming on Apple TV+. It will play in theaters Feb. 25-27 and feature open captions to be fully accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing. For more information on locations and how to claim tickets, visit coda.film/tickets.

“CODA,” which stands for “child of deaf adults,” follows a hearing girl named Ruby (Emilia Jones) who helps run a fishing business with her dad (Kotsur), mom (Marlee Matlin) and brother (Daniel Durant), all of whom are deaf. After signing up for high-school choir, Ruby dreams of becoming a singer and is torn between going off to college and staying home to help her family.

“CODA” premiered at last year’s virtual Sundance Film Festival, where it earned the fest’s highest honors including the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and U.S. Dramatic Audience Award. It was purchased by Apple for distribution for $25 million – a festival record – and released in theaters last August.

The critically acclaimed film (96% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes) is a formidable awards contender, earning best picture nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, where Kotsur was also nominated. It is vying for best ensemble – the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ equivalent of best picture – at the ceremony, airing on TNT and TBS Feb. 27 (8 EST/5 PST).

Kotsur made history as just the second deaf actor to receive an Oscar nomination after his “CODA” co-star Matlin, who won best actress for her film debut in 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God.”
