New AmsterdamThere are still a few months before the return of new episodes. Season 4’s game-changing finaleOne star, however, revealed a significant change in May. The fifth and final season. Freema, who played the role of Dr. Helen Sharpe right from the start, announced that Season 5 will be her last. With a touching message to her fans and a suggestion about how to keep the Sharpwin (and Helen) story going, she announced the news.
Freema Agyeman’s Helen had a rough ride throughout the fourth season despite finally starting Max and Max are in loveLondon, and her return to London. After experiencing difficulties with her mother, she returns to New York in a health crisis and near-death experience. In a karaoke party gone wrong, and Max planning a wedding for them without her input, it’s understandable that the character needed a break by the end of the finale.
Still, it’ll be sad to lose the character ahead of the premiere, so it’s nice to see that the actress has a message for the “Dam Fam.”On InstagramShe wrote:
First, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your tireless, passionate and fierce support. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to meet so many of you while I was in Helen Sharpe’s skin and see your emotional investment in her. It was quite an adventure! It was a great ride. She was so important to me. But now, it is time for me to put her white coat aside and announce that I will not return for New Amsterdam’s final season.
Although Helen’s passing may not have caused too much joy among fans (Especially after some cast comments during Season 4) from the final batch of episodes, the actress had nothing but good things to say about her time at New AmsterdamHer experiences as a character and the support from the fans. Her work as a doctor, and her relationship with Max have drawn a lot of interest from viewers. Her absence had to be dealt with by the hospital After she returned to London, in Season 4, but this will be the first time that she’ll be missing as a series regular. Agyeman continued:
Although I’m saddened by the ending, I am also excited to see the final chapter. It’s been a pleasure to play Dr. Helen Sharpe over the past 4 seasons. Those brilliant writers created a great character! I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity of telling some of her stories. Fanfic – it’s over to you to tell the rest!! Much love Fam!
Freema Agyeman clearly isn’t leaving with any bitterness about the series, as she considers herself a fan, and it sounds like she’ll be joining viewers in tuning in when the fifth season debuts. It doesn’t sound like she’s planning on appearing at all, based on this post and her advice to fanfic writers to pic up the story and tell what happens next. However, there are many possibilities between now and the end 13-episode season.
It should be interesting to see how the show handles Helen’s sudden absence. She told Max that she couldn’t come to New York to marry him, and was still in London by the end of the Season 4 finale, so her exit was set up in a way that it won’t be too jarring for the show to return without her. It could be a lot on whether or not she returns to New York. New Amsterdam goes for a time jump over hiatus, to give Max some time after Helen missed what he’d intended to be their wedding.
