Sex Education’s fourth season is just around the corner. Fans of the show have already voiced their opinions on the much-debated Maeve and Ruby controversy.
Since Sex Education first arrived on Netflix in 2019, Otis Milburn has had a number of potential love interests and with season 4 now on the horizon, two of those would-be romances – Maeve Wiley or Ruby Matthews – are set to be put back under the spotlight with fans unable to decide who Otis is better off with – but a fan poll has settled the long-running debate.
Maeve
Otis and Maeve have had a long-standing will-they-won’t-they relationship ever since season 1 when the pair first formed the Moordale sex clinic.
The pair had come close to making the leap from being friends and business partners to a romantic couple but several obstacles – such as a deleted voice message – have gotten in the way.

Ruby
Ruby Matthews has been an unexpected romantic interest for Otis during the third season after they first had slept together in season 2 following a drunken celebration.
Ruby, despite her popularity as a leader in the Untouchables, was quickly accepted by fans, especially after she began spending more time with Otis. They eventually went from secretive, casual sex to boyfriend and girlfriend.
Their relationship hit a sizable stumbling block when Ruby told Otis that she loved him after he met her ill father and he revealed that he didn’t feel the same way.

Poll lets Sex Education supporters decide the Maeve or Ruby debate
In the days after Sex Education season 3 arrived on Netflix in September 2021 – yes, it really has been two years since the last season – France’s Netflix account posted a poll to Twitter (or should that be X now?) They asked the fans if they prefer Maeve over Ruby to be Otis’s potential partner.
Maeve won the poll by an incredibly narrow margin of 52.6% to 48.4%.
It’s clear that because Maeve and Otis have been hinted as a couple since way back in season 1, the majority of fans want to see the pair become a couple when Sex Education finally ends.
However, despite only becoming romantically involved with Otis in seasons 2 and 3, Ruby has quickly become a popular choice among a large section of the fanbase as she’s let the mean girl façade slip on occasion as more has been revealed about her home life and true personality.
Sex Education Season 4 will not disappoint. Whether Otis is with Maeve, Ruby, neither, or both, there are bound to be plenty of unexpected twists.
