Lizzo says she felt ‘undesirable’And ‘ashamed’ as stars didn’t ‘look like her’

Lizzo is known for her positive music and messages about beauty, self-love and others. However, growing up as Melissa Viviane Jefferson, Lizzo struggled with body confidence due to the overwhelming majority of pop stars who didn’t look like her.

Lizzo didn’t let this defeat them. Instead, she decided to change the rules and became an icon and role model for young girls across the globe.

A soul-opening experience InterviewLizzo shared her story with Elle this July about how she got started in the industry and how her attitudes toward social media changed. She also talked about how she learned to love herself.

‘I wasn’t really set up to believe that I was desirable’

The Lizzo we all know today is a symbol of body positivity, self-love and confidence, encouraging young girls and releasing feel good songs. However, she didn’t always feel this way about herself.

Lizzo began her career singing and performing in girl groups. She was insecure about her weight because almost every star she saw was her weight. “thinner and light-skinned,”With very few people looking like her.

“Sure, there were women like Missy Elliott and Queen Latifah. But they were the exception to the rule. And so I always felt like, even if the song is great, people wouldn’t want to hear it coming from me. So I thought, if I have other people on stage, too, that will take the focus off me a little bit,”She explained.

As a young girl, Lizzo wasn’t “set up to believe” that she wasn’t desirable, so she decided to take the matter into her own hands and change things. She began to find her confidence in the people she was around and how she treated herself.

She stated: “I spent years being ashamed. It took a lot of work for me to feel worthy of being in this place. To feel worthy of being a force to be reckoned with.”

How Lizzo began to feel Good as Hell…

Lizzo found self-confidence in the first place through the “fake it till you make it method.”She attracted many people who believed she was beautiful, including her best friend from Minneapolis. It was easy for her to believe that she was beautiful when she was around people who believed in it.

Lizzo was also able to shift her mindset towards social media.

“I don’t need social media, social media needs me. Social media literally needs people to function. I don’t need to go on the internet and feel better about stuff anymore. I have a therapist. I have best friends. I have an amazing team around me who I can talk to. I got love,”Elle was told by she.

Special: Lizzo’s latest album

Lizzo released her album Special on July 15, a 12-track collection that includes feel-good songs. It was preceded her hit single About Damn Time.

Zane Lowe heard Lizzo reveal that the album was originally entitled In Case Nobody Told Me until Max Martin helped her reformulate the hook of Special.

Grrls was one of the singles taken from the album. It came under fire for using an ableist slur. Lizzo quickly issued an apology and released a revised version of the song, where the word was deleted. She : “Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language.”
