Iconic Thrash Metal Band Slayer Announces Reunion for 2024 Festivals

California thrash metal icons Slayer have confirmed their return to the stage in 2024 for two major festival appearances. After calling it quits in 2019, the band is set to headline both Louder Than Life Festival in Kentucky and Riot Fest in Chicago this September.

The Reunion Lineup

The iconic band will feature the same lineup as when they officially disbanded. Tom Araya will be on bass and vocals, Kerry King and Gary Holt on guitars, and Paul Bostaph on drums. In a recent statement, Araya expressed their excitement for the upcoming performances, stating, “Nothing compares to the 90 minutes when we’re on stage playing live, sharing that intense energy with our fans.”

Reflecting on the Hiatus

Guitarist Kerry King also shared his sentiments, highlighting the significance of Slayer both to the band and their dedicated fans. He mentioned, “Have I missed playing live? Absolutely. Slayer means a lot to our fans; they mean a lot to us. It will be five years since we have seen them.”

A Brief History of Slayer

Originally formed in Huntington Park, California, in 1981 by King and Araya, along with Jeff Hanneman and Dave Lombardo, Slayer quickly rose to prominence in the thrash metal scene. They are often regarded as one of the “big four” bands of the genre, alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax.

Lineup Changes and Evolution

Slayer underwent some lineup changes over the years, with Lombardo departing in 1992 and returning in 2001 before his final exit in 2013. Bostaph took over drumming duties during these transitions. Tragically, guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed away in 2013 due to liver cirrhosis, leading to the recruitment of Gary Holt from Exodus to handle guitar responsibilities.

Musical Legacy and Future Plans

Before their retirement, Slayer released a total of 12 studio albums, with their final album being 2015’s “Repentless.” While there is no official word on the band’s plans for new music or extensive touring, Kerry King has already embarked on a new musical project, with Paul Bostaph also involved.

As fans eagerly anticipate the return of Slayer to the stage, the upcoming festival performances promise to be a memorable and thrilling experience for both the band and their dedicated followers.
