In just a few short years Jonathan Majors has made an impact in Hollywood, playing a variety roles on both the small and big screen. He’s checking on the biopic genre box with his latest film, DevotionThe film tells the story about Jesse Brown, a Naval fighter pilot who made history. It took some persuasion from co-star and executive producer Glen Powell for him to join, but compared to usual Hollywood deals, Powell’s pitch meeting happened in the hottest place possible. Majors finally shared what it was like for them when they met. Maverick is the Top GunStar pitched the film to him naked in a Russian Turkish sauna.
Majors and Powell’s unique negotiating place came up while Majors was promoting the military biopic on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Jimmy Kimmel was upset to learn about Majors’ role in the film. The Kang actor was unbothered by Kimmel’s question as he broke down how Powell’s pitch meeting ended up in a New York bathhouse.
It’s a pretty standard procedure. You have a meeting and say, “Hey, do you want to be part of the movie?” I was like, “Yeah. We could.” I would love to do it. The next step is to meet Glen Powell, who’s also our executive producers. I respond, “Yeah man, let us go to the Russian Turkish bathroom.”
Powell was taken aback by Majors’ suggested meeting place, with the MCU star recalling his co-star saying “What?” This confusion extended to Kimmel, as he couldn’t believe the unique meeting spot. Majors understood the host’s confusion as he ran down the usual Hollywood spots where most deals go down, including the Beverly Hills Hotel and The Bungalow. As he called the sauna, both stage and film actors realized that meeting in a public sauna was unusual. “the hottest place in New York.” Meeting in the high-temperature location might’ve been his idea, but that didn’t stop him from referring to it as “hell.”

Upon hearing Powell’s pitch, they shook hands on the deal and stayed in the steam room for an additional period time. After negotiating the deal, they went to London House in New York, where they enjoyed celebratory cocktails.
Powell related his account from the bathhouse meeting during the DevotionCast was being interviewed Variety. The rising star, much like Majors’ story recalls pitching to Majors while he was in a sauna. Majors was convinced by his passion project when he said that his brain felt like it was in a cooking pot.
Jonathan insisted that I meet him at a New York Russian bathhouse when I first met him. As my brain was failing and cooking, I showed him the whole movie in the sauna. I finally got him to sign.
Glen Powell was relieved that Jonathan Majors agreed, despite not being at his best during his pitch. However, it’s not hard to see why he was a little unsure of himself. While it’s easy to lose the mark in a hot or cold environment, Powell pitched the biopic well as Majors is promoting.
The Naval biopic chronicles the lives of Jesse Brown, Tom Hudner and their journey to become the most decorated wingmen of the Korean War. Majors plays the historic Brown, and Powell takes the role as Hudner. The supporting cast includes Joe Jonas and Serinda Swan, as well as Christina Jackson.
