Cruise first joined the church sometime in the mid-’80s, which is how he met his first wife Mimi Rogers. The actress was well-trained “auditor”for the religion, as she grew up in the faith after her father joined it. Rogers left the church later on. The couple eventually divorced in 1990. Even as the relationship that began in Scientology ended, Cruise’s future with the church remained bright.
Cruise was vocal about Scientology and advocated for it to be recognized in the US and internationally in the early aughts. Cruise also did this interview with Oprah Winfrey in the early aughts. He proclaimed his love for Katie Holmes, his then-girlfriend, and jumped onto the couch. Cruise was also close to David Miscavige (current leader of the church). Miscavige served as Cruise’s best man at his 2006 wedding to Holmes.

So, why do people seem to think that Cruise has begun stepping away from the religion in recent years when he’s historically been a very active member? Partly, this is due to the tabloids. The tabloids have been responsible for the decline in popularity over the last few years. Cruise is said to not be allowed to contact Suri as Suri no longer belongs to the church.

One question remains: Is Tom Cruise still a member of Church of Scientology. All indications point to yes, despite all the gossip in the tabloids. Cruise is still living in Clearwater, Florida where he owns a penthouse. It is located just blocks from Scientology headquarters. Connor Cruise, his son, also reportedly resides in Clearwater.
Cruise has also been spending some time in London, which is also a major hub for scientists. Isabella Jane Cruise, his daughter, lives in London with her husband. She is, however, a still active member of Scientology. If Cruise ever were to leave Scientology, it’s not a story that would be broken by the likes of Life & Style or some random Australian tabloid, that’s for sure.
