Is Purple Hearts on Netflix true to life?

If you’re looking for a palate cleanser after checking out the action-packed The Gray Man on Netflix, then the streamer has the perfect treat in store with Purple Hearts.

Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum directed the romantic drama, which premiered on Netflix Friday, July 29, 2022. It featured central performances by Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine, who played Cassie and Luke.

It’s the story of an aspiring musician who enters a marriage of convenience with a soon-to-deploy Marine. They come from different backgrounds, which creates tension. However, they fall in love and open up to big problems.

It is possible for audiences to become completely invested in the romantic (purple-colored) heart of the movie. But, this investment may motivate you to ask a question. Purple Hearts is it based on true stories?

Purple Hearts is it based on true stories?

Purple Hearts does not take its inspiration from a true story. However, it is based on Tess Wakefield’s 2017 book of the same name.

Before Purple Hearts Tess was an author for young readers. So the novel marked a shift in her writing style. She set out to research a story for adults and began the process of writing it.

You can take, for instance: Cinemeaholic reports that she researched topics of addiction and the healthcare system to help advise her on how to write about Luke’s history of substance abuse.

In sculpting Cassie’s character, she looked into music theory to grasp a better understanding of her knowledge, as well as diabetes to portray her illness more accurately. Because it was crucial to the plot, she also studied military law.

There was a lot more work that went into the project too, including Tess’ decision to reach out and speak with the Puerto Rican community in an attempt to learn more about traditional family dynamics.

‘This story is about choosing not to see color’

Sofia Carson, who plays Cassie, previously spoke out about the deeper meanings of Purple Hearts during a conversation with Collider:

“What drew me to the story the most was the message. When I first read the title, I asked Liz if Purple Hearts meant it was the blending of a red and a blue heart, and she giggled and she said, ‘I hadn’t thought of it that way, but that’s exactly what our story is.’ We live in a country that’s so incredibly divided right now, red versus blue.”

She continued: “This story is about choosing not to see color and choosing love, above all things, and how a red heart and a blue heart can come together and choose love. That can change the world in the most beautiful way.”
