While fans waited for the latest information, Girls Trip 2Regina Hall gave a shocking blow to those who were expecting good news. Hall revealed production of the sequel hadn’t started yet for an obvious reason:
What do you know? I hate disappointing. We are not yet in production. It isn’t yet written. It’s not written yet, but I can’t wait for the script. It will happen, that’s all I have been told. They did tell me that they were writing…It’s likely just — Everything slows down due to schedules. Then Omicron came along. You know what else? Every few months there is a new COVID wiggle.
Hall’s words are a bit disappointing, but understandable given the current impasse between Hollywood and COVID. It could also prove difficult to coordinate four schedules due to the busyness of all the actresses. This isn’t the first time Regina Hall has mentioned scheduling as an issue as the reason Girls Trip 2 hasn’t happened yet. It is not the same film as the original. The trip part deals with the post-COVID world of traveling to a different location.
Regina Hall’s words marked a departure from what Girls TripWill Packer, producer, spoke about the long-awaited sequel. Packer said earlier this year the comedy sequel was finally on the horizon. The only issue with it being filmed in the wrong place. He said that production was looking for another spot for the ladies for debauchery or craziness.
Premiering in 2017 Girls Trip was one of that year’s biggest surprise hits. This comedy, which was geared towards women, followed four college friends, Ryan Sasha Lisa, Lisa, Dina and the Flossy Posse, as they reunited at Essence Music Festival, New Orleans, after not seeing one another for many years. There were plenty of raunchy scenes, such as the famous grapefruit scene.
The Malcolm D. Lee-directed comedy earned over $140 million and was the first comedy to surpass the $100 million mark. The movie was a commercial success and received praises for its cast, original storyline, and casting. Girls Trip became Tiffany Haddish’s breakout role after years of working in film and television in Hollywood. It was also the reunion of Jada Pinkett and Queen Latifah, who had co-starred in the 1996 crime drama. Start It Off.
