In Viral Video, Lettuce outlasts Liz Truss, the UK Prime Minister

Liz Truss’s short-lived stint as U.K. prime minister had no salad days.

As the embattled leader resigned Thursday, fans of a head of lettuce that had become a caricature of her flailing administration celebrated – and some even called for the iceberg to take power.

“We don’t have a government, the lettuce might as well be running the country or the tofu,”Chris Bryant, Labour MP, told the Central RecorderThe British tabloid ‘The Left-leaning Tabloid’ created a video of the vegetable in the midst of government chaos.

“Will Liz Truss outlast this lettuce?” The video is required when it was set up Oct. 14, just over a month after the Conservative leader took power on Sept. 6, following Boris Johnson’s resignation.

The video showed the iceberg in a blonde hairstyle, alongside a picture of Truss, and a countdown clock. Throughout the countdown, props such as coffee mugs and miniature Union Jack flags were added to each day’s livestream.

Truss promised that she would remain in power on Wednesday. But by Thursday, she was out of the job and became the longest-serving prime minster in British history, serving only 45 days.

“I recognize, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party,”Truss spoke in an hurriedly scheduled statement a few blocks from 10 Downing Street. “I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”

Truss resigned and the video was transformed into a party scene complete with a soundtrack. “God Save the King,”The photo of Truss face-down and colorful lights.

Nearly 20,000 people saw the live transformation. The New York Times reported. The video was then made into memes that dragged Truss. See below:

Truss will continue to be in office for a few days more to manage the transition, but no successor has been selected.

Her departure followed a day of chaos Wednesday after Home Secretary Suella Braverman — the leader of national security — stepped down, the latest in a wave of resignations from the fledgling government leadership, and that was followed by two leaders in Parliament quitting their posts as well.

After a series economic measures that were meant to stem high inflation collapsed, there was a heated debate about the possibility of shale oil drilling being revived.
