TikTok is currently embracing a new trend called ‘product overload’.

People who use the platform for cleaning will be familiarized with the ‘CleanTok” corner.

Experts warn this trend could lead to serious health problems, including skin burns.

A person may overuse a variety of cleaning chemicals in a sink, bath, or toilet.

One doctor warns that this trend could lead to skin and respiratory problems.

Kelly Johnson-Arbor, a medical toxicologist said it can be extremely dangerous – especially if the equipment is not used correctly.

Dr Johnson-Arbor from the US is the medical director for the National Poison Center. She explained that cleaning products may have a basic Ph.

“People should wear rubber gloves when using these products, as skin irritation, including redness and pain or even chemical burns, can occur after use”She advised.

She explained, “Mixing bleach/ammonia results in the release of chloramine gases. Also, mixing bleach/toilet bowl cleaner can trigger the release o chlorine gas.

“Inhalation of either of these can cause coughing, irritation of the nose and throat, and trouble breathing; for those with asthma, COPD or lung disease, serious respiratory problems can occur and can even result in death.”

Johnson-Arbor explained that some people are unaware of the fact that their bathrooms do not have adequate ventilation.

Proper ventilation, in the form fans and windows, can reduce the unpleasant odours caused by chemicals.

This is because fumes can get concentrated, which increases the risk for respiratory toxicities.

Dr Johnson-Arbor advised that you use gloves and a mask to get the most out of these trends.

Important to remember is that any product should be used according to the instructions.

Although it could make great content for social networks, she cautioned that children might see it as a game and/or consider the liquid something to be ingested.

Many products are packaged in vibrant colors.

To prevent your child from stealing the products, keep them locked in a safe place.
