Life Lessons from a Travel Influencer: The Reality of Working on a Cruise Ship

All too often we spend months saving for a holiday, only for it to be over all too soon. One twentysomething is travelling the world for free after snagging her dream job – and she doesn’t even have to worry about paying rent.

Whilst most women in their twenties might go on the odd girls’ holiday, Amber Olivia has been exploring Santorini, New Zealand and cruising around the Caribbean. Life is one long holiday for the actress and has been ever since she became an entertainer on board a cruise ship in 2019.

Better known as @amboliviaa on Tiktok, the young woman will even give a peak behind the curtain with her revealing what life is like on-board. Influencing isn’t her only role either, with Amber playing Fortuna Luck, the luckiest woman on the seven seas, as well as a pirate to entertain guests.

Not only will she appear in multiple shows per day but the Mansfield native will also join guests for various excursions as a ‘resident guest entertainer’. Taking time out to tour destinations like Hawaii, Montenegro, and the Canaries also comes at no extra cost – as Amber explained in a now-viral video.

“We don’t have to pay for shore excursions,” she explained, adding: “We actually get to go on those for free sometimes as an ‘escort’…you can sign up [and] if you get approved you get to go for completely free.”

The serious savings don’t end there though, with the young actress revealing that accommodation is also free on the seven seas. “Sometimes guests think that we helicopter in every single day,” she joked, with Amber revealing that staff will be allocated a cabin based on their job role.

She can even get away without doing a weekly shop, as the majority of food has been provided for the cast and crew. If you do fancy dining in style, there is even a staff discount at the cruise liner’s most luxurious restaurants, and Amber will often indulge for special occasions.

Whilst people often joke that death and taxes are an unavoidable part of life, this isn’t the case for those working on cruise ships. Despite the government allowing this, the content creator has come under fire for just paying National Insurance.

“I mentioned this in another video and everyone came for me in the comments, saying ‘shame on you for not paying for your country’,” she revealed, complaining: “I didn’t make the rules.”

Before you sign up to sail the seven seas though, there is one major downside to life onboard as the twentysomething shared that it can put a dampener on your love life. Unlike the cast of Below Deck, Amber admits that dating cruise ship guests is a big ‘no-no’.

Even though she is currently single, the travel influencer refuses to bend the rules and argues that it ‘isn’t worth her job’. “This is the biggest no-no in your contract ever, like if you do this…you will get fired,” she pointedly told fans, adding that you can even get caught out via CCTV.

“We are encouraged to mingle and socialize, but that is it. You are not allowed to be going back to anyone’s cabins and they are not allowed to go back to yours,” she said. She then joked: “We aren’t in the days of the love boat.”

Bringing partners onboard is similarly problematic, with crew having to inform senior staff about potential visits – which isn’t very romantic. Well, that’s put a hole in things.

The content creator revealed that she doesn’t have to pay for rent, tax or food onboard. Sadly, life on the open seas isn’t as romantic as you’d think.
