NEWCASTLE is chasing Champions League football for first time since 2003, after beating Tottenham.
Eddie Howe’s team won the victory, moving up to fourth place after 11 games. They had lost only once this season.
Since his arrival as Toon boss, Howe has been able invest extensively. With spending set to continue Newcastle will be in a position to qualify for the Champions League.
If they win, it will be the first time the competition has been held in 19 years.
Bobby Robson, who died in August 2003, was in charge when the Magpies lost to Partizan Belgrade’s third qualifying round.
Newcastle won the first leg by 1-0. Belgrade lost the second leg on penalties to Belgrade, who had won 1-0 at St. John’s Park.

He made 12 appearances in Champions League, and also spent time at Fulham and Hearts.
Andy O’Brien
In his first season with Newcastle, he helped to achieve a third-place finish.
The 43-year old was a key player in the team’s success until his poor form in 2005 led to his departure to Portsmouth.
Jonathan Woodgate
Woodgate was one of the most prominent players in the team. He had nullified Didier Drogba in an Uefa Cup semi final clash against Marseille just a few months before.
Before joining Real Madrid, he helped Newcastle achieve a fifth-place finish during his first season.
Woodgate, 42, has also managed Middlesbrough and Leeds. He is currently back as a coach for Michael Carrick.
Olivier Bernard
43-year-old Frenchman made 102 appearances during his first spell at club between 2000 and 2005.
He was back in 2006 when he suffered an injury that ended his career. He never returned.
Bernard blamed Graeme Souness (ex-Toon boss) for his premature retirement. The ex-defender is now working with Show Racism, an anti-racism education organization.
Nolberto Solano
The 47-year-old Peruvian was a cult hero of the north-east. He also had two spells with the club between 1998-04 and 2005-07.
He was a part of 314 matches for Newcastle and scored 48 goals.
Gary Speed
Speed was an important figure in Newcastle and Wales during his time in the north-east. He finished twice as a FA Cup runner up with the Magpies in 1999 and 1998.
He was 42 years old when he died in 2011.
Hugo Viana
He was injured during his time at the club, and he only made 39 Prem appearances from 2002-04.
Viana, 39 years old, is the director of football at Sporting Lisbon. He tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.
Kieron Dyer
Dyer, 43 years old, was a 250-times player for Newcastle from 1999 to 2007.
His fight with Lee Bowyer, former teammate and infamous fight during the 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa is what most people remember. But, he also won 33 England caps for his great form for Toon.
Dyer appeared on I’m a Celebrity since retiring and was promoted to manager of Ipswich’s Under-23s. He resigned in March.
Alan Shearer
The Newcastle legend, 52 years old, made only ten Champions League games with Newcastle, and never received a major award.
However, the Match of the Day pundit held the record for the club’s highest scorer with 206 goals across 405 games. He retired in 2006
Shola Ameobi
Ameobi was another well-known figure at St. John’s Park. He made 397 appearances and scored 79 goals after rising through ranks.
In 2019, he returned to the Magpies as loan coordinator, a position he still holds.
