A Pensioner Spent 34 Years Building an 85ft Castle in his Back Garden
Gerry Halman, also known as Lord Gregarious, has finally realized his dream of having his own castle by constructing an 85ft high medieval-style building in his backyard. After becoming tired of merely visiting castles, he decided to take matters into his own hands and create a majestic structure that stands out amongst its surroundings.

The castle, named Castle Olt Stoutenburght, is situated in Blesdijke, a village located about 70 miles northeast of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. It features four towers with multiple storeys, a main hall, suits of armour, and an underground cellar, all meticulously crafted by Gerry over the span of three decades.

Despite lacking formal architectural training, Gerry’s attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the construction, with no cracks in the walls as a testament to his skill and dedication. Inspired by Romanesque architecture, he draws his motivation from books and personal visits to various castles, ensuring that his creation reflects his passion for history and design.
Unfinished Masterpiece and Ongoing Inspiration
While Gerry admits that the castle remains unfinished after all these years, he views it as a perpetual work in progress, constantly evolving and improving. With no architectural blueprints, Gerry relies on his imagination and extensive knowledge to bring his vision to life, showcasing the power of creativity and determination.
Unique Touches and Endless Creativity
As a former owner of a fancy dress store, Gerry has incorporated mannequins around the castle, crafted to resemble tower guards and damsels in distress, adding a whimsical touch to the medieval setting. To enhance the mystical atmosphere, he recently introduced a dragon to the castle as a personal birthday gift, symbolizing protection and strength.

While Gerry acknowledges that his castle may never reach a state of completion during his lifetime, he offers the space for rent for parties and weddings on a limited basis, allowing others to experience the magic and grandeur of his architectural masterpiece.
