The very fast-moving world of “Anything’s Possible,”A romantic comedy set at a Pittsburgh high school. There are scenes between the leads, Kelsa, (Eva Reign), and Khal, (Abubakr Al). “Power Book II: Ghost”), that feel fresh and realistic, and this is mainly due to the script by Ximena García Lecuona, which makes the youthful characters and their parents very sensitive and likable.
This movie begins to go wrong when the well-delineated characters are forced into a series plot-and-issue confrontation scenes. These scenes feel rushed and contrived, despite the charming realism of their courtship scenes in the first third.
In the initial few minutes of “Anything’s Possible” are fairly rocky, as we get introduced to KelsaAnd her friends and Kelsa’s divorced mother (Renée Elise Goldsberry of “Hamilton” and “Girls5eva”Kelsa’s mother, (Madame Laurel), is the sole caregiver. Kelsa also has a YouTube channel, where she discusses the animal kingdom and why she is so passionate about certain animals. “What makes them unique also helps them survive,”She said. Kelsa, who is transgender, is described as being bright and self-aware.
The movie is almost immediately able to find its feet in the love-at-first sight scene in art class. Kelsa stumbles in, and Khal stares at her with interest. When we see Khal with his family, the conversation turns to poetry, and Khal’s quick-witted mother says that this was “a viable career option in the 13th century.”This tone is sharp and cultured. “Pose”Star Billy Porter makes his directorial debut in this film.
Kelsa fears that people could pretend to love her to be like them. “woke,”She is also concerned that Khal might be interested in her because of other reasons, but it is clear that Khal is attracted to her as an individual and is especially drawn to her eloquence. This may remind him of his family.
Kelsa is a teenager that is smart enough to care about how she is perceived “self-congratulatory,”This is why Khal is attracted to her. They have a real connection that is charming, especially in a staged scene in which they both admit to feeling awkward before going in for a kiss.
This is the limit. “Anything’s Possible”It has been a careful avoiding being a wish-fulfillment fairytale and has insist on the plausibility both of its characters and of the situation. Kelsa, Khal, and other students would probably have some difficulties in school. But when they do, it looks like there are a lot of boxes to check off. “trans issues that need to be addressed.”
These issue scenes are rushed and ill-advised. “drama”It takes its place. And all this drama gets resolved so quickly that it doesn’t finally feel like these issues are particularly difficult or challenging – that is, of course, not the case. The characters start yelling at each other and then they yell louder until they run away, only to return to screaming and continue to shouting until the movie ends and we can move on to the love story.
Porter can’t resist including a shot of a mural of himself as his lovebirds visit the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, but the conclusion of “Anything’s Possible” is once again as sensitive and plausible as the courtship scenes between Kelsa and Khal – who are, after all, young and will need to find their way with others once they go to college. It would be nice if “Anything’s Possible”This relationship was shown in its entirety onscreen. It didn’t need to be cluttered with too many issues that would have been more appropriate for a newspaper editorial than a narrative story.
