Amazon Ring doorbells and Google Doorbells are not safe!

Owners of smart doorbells from the largest brands are warned their footage can be downloaded without permission.

Ring is the only company that has been reported in a report to have shared homeowner footage without homeowners’ knowledge with law enforcement at least 11 times by 2022.

Now Google's Nest could hand over footage without permission too

Google is said to do the same thing with their Nest Doorbells.

According to the terms and conditions of Nest, it can give video recordings from Nest Doorbells directly to law enforcement in life-threatening situations.

If we have a reasonable belief that we could prevent someone dying or sustaining serious bodily harm, then we might provide the information to an agency of government,” says the company.

For example, bomb threats, shootings at schools, kidnappings and suicide prevention cases.

The request will be considered in accordance with applicable law and policy.

According to a spokesperson CNET Google can disclose your information without any subpoenas and warrants – at the very least, in the US.

According to this law, content is permitted “if, in good conscience, the provider believes there to be an emergency that involves danger of serious bodily injury or death to any individual and requires immediate disclosure of communications related to the emergency.”

Google, said the spokesperson, tries to inform users ahead of time.

Ring – which is owned by Amazon – has previously said it’s “simply untrue that Ring gives anyone unfettered access to customer data or video, as we have repeatedly made clear to our customers and others”.

Some requests have been denied.

Others who make video doorbells such as Arlo and Eufy have stated that they will never release video without first obtaining a warrant.

Ring is one device that offers this end-to-end security. However, it doesn’t come on automatically. You’ll need to turn it on.
