Young Welsh footballer achieves top GCSE grades

Future football star, who has played for her country, has received top grades in her GCSEs.

Evie Norris, a woman from Alltwen, near Swansea said that she was “shocked” when she opened her exam results on Thursday to find she had been awarded 11 A*s and three As.

The 16-year-old was picked to play for Wales in the nation’s under-17s head-to-head with Scotland in July.

The teenager scored the only goal for Wales, losing 3-1 at Falkirk stadium.

Evie indicated that she is now planning to enroll at Gorseinon College in order to take A-level biology and chemistry. She also wants to be a scientist.

She stated that: “I got my first cap for Wales this year and I’m hoping to get another one in the under-17s team before the end of the year.

“It was amazing to play for my country and celebrate with the whole team when we got that goal.

“I do want to go as far as I can go with it.

“I’ll train hard and see where it takes me.”

She has played for West Wales since a young age and now plays for Neath Port Talbot’s Briton Ferry. She said that a lot of clubs have approached to her to play for them.

She has also played for Swansea City West Glamorgan, Swansea City, and her school, Cwmtawe community School.

She stated: “I started playing with my dad and older brother and I’d sometimes go with my brother to his training sessions.

“I just fell in love with football.”

Evie stated that she believes the number of opportunities for women and girls to play football is increasing and she hopes this trend continues.

Bethany England, a Chelsea forward, has offered support to her. She was part of the Lionesses team that won Euro 2022.

England gifted Evie with a Chelsea kit and signed memorabilia. She also received a pair of football boots that she wore for her first match in Wales.

Evie said: “I just want to thank everyone for being so supportive.

“My parents who always help me when I get stuck on revision, and my teachers for being supportive with my football but with everything that has happened over the pandemic. It has been a really difficult time and they’ve really made sure we knew what was going on at all times.”

Although the percentage of top-ranking pupils in Wales has dropped, it is still higher than before the pandemic.

Education minister Jeremy Miles was in Caernarfon to visit Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen. He told students to be thankful “proud of your hard work through the disruption of the last two years”.
