Officers last night said they were confident of the identity of the woman, who was in her 20s, and have been in touch with her family.

The suspect was arrested in Lewisham a few hours after cops made the grim discovery and remains in custody for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Shirley of the Met Police said: “The victim was found near the OneSpace community centre in Kidbrooke Park, which is a facility used by lots of people.

“The park is popular for dog walkers as well as joggers. We may be able to use the valuable information provided by park users.

“Were you in or around the park area at around 20:30hrs on Friday, 17 September? You saw someone acting suspiciously or loitering in the area.

“Or did you witness someone running or hurrying away from the scene? It is important that you share any information you may have.

We are working round the clock to bring justice to the family of this young girl, and we need your support.

“Please contact 0208 721 4266, or 101. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers.”

Police confirmed that there are still crime scenes in place and will hold a post mortem.

Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, South East BCU Commander added: “We are doing all we can to support our colleagues in Specialist Crime with their investigation.

After this incident, local residents can expect an increase in police presence and increased visibility patrols.

“If you have information that you think could help, please approach those officers on duty and share what you know. Communities and police must work together to tackle violent crime.”
