After revealing that she had been charged more than $50,000 for her child’s birth, a California woman became viral via TikTok
Shannon Mayor left her job in tech to open a new business. Small businessShe found out that she was pregnant and began looking for a baby. “the best insurance I can get,”In a telephone interview, she stated.
“To be honest, it was very stressful having to switch insurances and then also having to switch insurances a week before my baby was born to my husband’s insurance,”Insider – Mayor “Insurance is complicated. It’s not easy in this country to figure out, and you can be screwed if you don’t, you know, really think ahead.”
Mayor stated that she spent a week in a private room at hospital and told Insider how she felt. “a lot of gratitude towards my hospital stay, my doctor, and the care I received.”

Mayor, who lives in Northern California with her husband, and their five-month old son, obtained the hospital bill. This showed her insurance company paid $50,816.02 for the birth costs. The bill stated that Mayor was responsible to pay $250.
She was shocked at the amount and pulled out her phone to show her friends. TikTok videoThis video has been viewed more than 8,000,000 times as of Friday.

She also added: “I was grateful that I have insurance. A lot of people aren’t that fortunate in this country to have really good insurance like I had, and without it, it would have cost a lot more likely to have my baby. Not a lot of people have access to that kind of insurance, so I felt a lot of gratitude in that moment.”
The hospital bill was also shared by many in the comments to Mayor’s viral video. Some even shared their birth stories and hospital bills. Some commenters pointed out that childbirth costs in Europe are different than in Europe.
One commenter stated that their daughter spent two months in the NICU, which resulted in a bill of approximately $1.5 million. TikToker @usa.mom.in.germany is a US expatriate mother who lives in Germany. Her own responseMayor claims that she paid just over $50 USD to have her child abroad.
“I think it’s cool that it’s sparked a lot of conversation about universal health care. We have a lot of people coming in from other countries talking about their experiences,”Mayor responded to Insider’s comments on the video. “Reading the comments, hearing people’s stories, it’s definitely been really eye-opening and helped me realize just how many different perspectives exist about healthcare and access to it.”
Mayor spoke out to Insider in the wake her viral fame. She hopes that people are inspired by her video. “to really question our systems and how things are working.”
“I think the biggest thing is getting out and voting, being vocal about changes you want to happen,”She spoke. “And then of course, talking to friends and family, encouraging them to vote, and encouraging other people to really start to look and see the inequalities that exist here in our country with healthcare, especially in comparison to so many other countries around the world.”
