Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 sci fi spectacle Dune features a variety of planetary terrains and other-worldly encounters.
With a cast led by Timothée Chalamet and Oscar Isaac, audiences are curious to know more about Dune and its filming locations.
Where was Dune shot?
Principal photography for Dune began in March 2019 and continued until July 20, 2019. Additional filming will begin in August 2020.
Zendaya, Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa traveled for months to film the movie in a variety of locations.
The crew and actors were spotted filming all over the globe as production progressed.
The scenes were first shot at Origo Film Studios, Budapest, Hungary, just before principal photography began.
The Dune crew then traveled to Wadi Rum, Jordan, to film scenes.
Regarding the filming process in the Wadi Rum desert, Timothée Chalamet told EMPIRE: “That Wadi Rum section is so breathtaking, it’s almost like being chased by the cliff behind.
“It wasn’t a green screen or anything. That’s one of the most thrilling parts of the book and the movie.”
The set was moved to Abu Dhabi to film scenes at Liwa Oasis.
Hans Fraikin, Film Commissioner for Abu Dhabi, said that Dune’s decision not to stop shooting in Abu Dhabi was a matter of concern. Variety: “Abu Dhabi’s reputation as one of the most diverse yet accessible locations for filming is what put us on the director’s radar, but the deal was sealed when Denis first laid his eyes on Liwa.
“We believe that the combination of natural beauty and accessibility is an uncommon opportunity for filmmakers.
“There is just such a rich diversity of locations. That said, a film crew also needs expert local talent, world-class facilities, and a supportive environment, all of which Abu Dhabi offers.”
Fraikin added: “It really is end-to-end support. Of course, a 30% rebate and year-round sun help too.”
The following locations served as backdrops to Dune:
