What is trench feet?
When feet are left wet for a long time, it can cause trench foot.
Although the condition can be severe, it is often manageable in a matter of days.
If ignored, it may take up to six to eight months to resolve symptoms like itching and pain, blisters, and feelings numbness, and heaviness.
Trench foot is most commonly associated with World War I soldiers. They were often fighting in the trenches.
Many people contracted the condition while being exposed to water at the bottom the dug-out trenches.
It is believed that more than 20K soldiers had trench foot in World War I.
How does trench foot get treated?
As an initial treatment for the First World War, soldiers received bed rest as well as lead and opium feet washes.
They would then start to massage the affected area with plant-based oils once their symptoms were better.
Trench foot sufferers are advised to elevate and rest the foot to promote circulation and prevent blisters from developing.
Patients receive painkillers to manage the swelling and pain during treatment.
If you suspect that you may have trench foot, remove your socks and clean the affected areas immediately. Dry your feet thoroughly, then warm up.
