While Netflix’s Enola Holmes films obviously tell the story of the titular detective, the mystery movies also feature a splash of romance as Enola is joined by the young Viscount Tewksbury.

From their first meeting in 2020’s film, Enola is quick to poke fun at Tewksbury, notably calling him a ‘nincompoop’When she discovers him in her luggage bag, she puts him on a train.

Enola Holmes gave Tewksbury the nickname “nincompoop” in 1996. But what does the word mean?

The first Enola Holmes film features a young detective who is confronted with the possibility of being sent by her older brother Mycroft to finish school. To avoid this fate, she sneaks out to board a train and hides from Mycroft.

She finds young Viscount Tewksbury, who is being pursued by Linthorn and hides in a suitcase bag.

Enola is shocked by Tewksbury’s first conversation and calls him a nincompoop.

The film ends with Enola claiming that Tewksbury is what Enola thinks Tewksbury looks. “the nincompoop you were born to be,”when they meet outside of House of Lords.

This name is repeated in the sequel as well. Enola called Tewksbury an idiot in her opening monologue, as well as in key scenes later in film.

What is Enola Holmes’ meaning of “nincompoop”?

A nincompoop can be described as a stupid or foolish person.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word was first used in the 1600s. However, the origins of nincompoop remain disputed.

It is very similar to the Latin phrase. “non compos mentis”What does it mean to be someone? ‘insane or mentally incompetent.’However, the Oxford English Dictionary denies that there is a connection.

Another possible origin for the word is that it is derived from a person’s name, potentially Nicodemus which was used in French to mean ‘a fool.’

Although Enola originally used the term “nincompoop” to refer to Tewksbury at first, Enola’s use of this nickname becomes more playful as they go on their adventures and become closer.

Are Enola and Tewksbury ever going to be together? [Spoilers]

Yes, Enola does meet Tewksbury at Enola Holmes 2.

In the opening moments of the new film, it’s clear that Enola still has lingering feelings for Tewksbury but in an effort to stand on her own two feet, she tries to suppress her emotions about him.

Both men eventually come across each other in a park, while Tewksbury is going to the House of Lords. Soon it becomes clear that Enola has been frequenting the park to watch out for the Viscount.

Their paths cross again later in the film when Enola attends a ball in the hopes of questioning a man named William Lyon about her current investigation but in order to speak with him, she will have to dance with him – there is one slight problem, however, she can’t dance.

Enola is fortunate to have Tewksbury on hand to teach her and, during their spontaneous dance lesson, they rekindle the romance.

Enola, who got into trouble with the police after she was, seeks refuge with Tewksbury. During this meeting, they finally confess their feelings for each other, in an awkward manner.

Tewksbury, who is a great help to both Enola as well as Sherlock, is with Enola during her ongoing investigation.

Enola & Tewksbury finally have a good time on a carriage ride up to the theatre to see the final showdown. Enola asked Tewksbury how to defend himself and Enola agreed.

After all of the case’s loose ends are tied up, the film ends with Tewksbury bringing Enola a bunch of flowers before they take a stroll through London, arm in arm and joking about an upcoming ball that Tewksbury has been invited to with the young Holmes once again calling him a nincompoop.
