Netflix invites viewers to enjoy the dark fantasy of one series that has been the most anticipated in recent history. Of course, we’re talking about The Sandman.

The new series is based off the comic book series of that name by Neil Gaiman. Devotees of his work will be delighted to learn that he also co-developed the show along with Allan Heinberg, David S Goyer, and Allan Heinberg.

The original graphic novel series was published by DC Comics. It ran from January 1889 through March 1996. There were 75 issues and ten trade paperbacks. Now, Netflix audiences can witness the story of Dream (played by Tom Sturridge) on the screen, a cosmic being who controls dreams that is left to pick up the pieces after he’s been held captive for years.

With season 1 offering 10 episodes to binge, it’s worth considering how much of the story these instalments offer. Which graphic novels does The Sandman adapt from Netflix’s season 1?

Season 1 contains the first two books of The Sandman.

Titled Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll’s House, these two graphic novels contain issues #1 – 16, with Preludes containing the first 8 and The Doll’s House made up of issues 9 through 16.

Those who are familiar with the graphic novels might have noticed that the first 4 episodes of the Netflix series were named after the first 4 issues: Dream a Little Dream of Me and Sleep of the Just, Imperfect hosts.

Neil Gaiman clarified the situation recently on Twitter.

‘Don’t stop before episode six’

With The Sandman graphic novels split into 10 books, it’s perhaps not too surprising that Neil Gaiman has suggested his thoughts on the best way to tackle season 1 of the series.

“I think that 10 episodes is probably too long for people to sit down and do an all day listening party,”He told the story IGNIn a recent interview

“… honestly, I think the emotional impact of all 10 episodes at once is probably going to destroy you… I would say that for anybody who was doing the giant viewing party, or planning to take the day off or whatever, I’d say go to episode six.”

He continued: “Don’t stop before episode six, but get to episode six and then have a day off to digest before you go back and do The Doll’s House.”
