Yet, they collide for the new 2022 movie release Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. It’s definitely a different kind of music biopic, but one that still had to ask the same question popular to the genre: to sing or lip-sync?
It all comes down to WeirdIt was decided that Daniel Radcliffe would be the singer on set. Weird Al would however, record a new recording of his voice and play it over the actor. Weird Al recalled having mixed feelings when it came time to make that decision. In Yankovic’s words:
It was something that we argued about. Eric and I felt a touch of regret when we heard Daniel sing. I mean, we knew he was a great singer — he’s a Broadway star. But [on the set]Eric and I would then sing along to the pre-recorded tracks. Eric would then look at us and say, “I’m singing along.” ‘Did we make a mistake here?’ The trouble always was that it’s a biopic thing for people to be lip-syncing, because it’s good. We thought it was famously done in Bohemian Rhapsody by Rami Malek. ‘That’This is a joke. That’s part of the joke.’ But man, Daniel would have killed it either way.
Daniel Radcliffe’s best-known work is the Harry Potterfilm, but the actor can also sing, with many stints on Broadway and West End stages. This includes the upcoming revival Stephen Sondheim’s. Merrily We Roll Along. Following Yankovic’s comments to PolygonRadcliffe said this about Radcliffe’s decision to not use his voice.
That’s really, really kind. But I think it’s very funny — I get a kick every time I start ‘My Bologna,’My mouth opens and you speak. It’s my favorite thing.
Daniel Radcliffe sounds like he wasn’t precious about his voice being in Weird, but the man the movie aims to pay tribute to wasn’t so sure. Although the actor is a great actor, the production decided that it would enhance the film’s overall atmosphere. The movie gets very meta because it mocks his life and career. Radcliffe said that some people believed it to be his voice. He believes it is, however. “so obviously” Al Yankovic.
