Watch out for the “winter” side effect in your feet after receiving the vaccine

Most people experience a mild headache, tiredness, or ache after taking a Covid vaccine.

However, it is rare for people to experience strange side effects in their feet. Experts believe this happens more often in the colder months.

It occurs during the winter booster vaccination programme, when all over 40-year-olds are eligible for top-up vaccines.

Britons were told to get their booster shot in an effort to save Christmas.

Vaccines activate the immune system to respond to a pathogen (in this case, the coronavirus), so it is ready for infection.

As the body builds up its protection, side effects are created.

They are a sign that everything is working, experts say, and shouldn’t scare people away from getting their next dose.

Feelings “under the weather”A skin reaction may be normal after a jab.

Some people report experiencing this. “Covid toes”After vaccination with Moderna or Pfizer – both messengerRNA (mRNA), vaccines.

It can cause swelling, itching, bruising, or blistering around your toes.

More than a year ago, covid toe was recognized as a sign of coronavirus infected.

However, Esther Freeman from Harvard Medical School was an associate professor of dermatology. She said that it was a good idea. “novel”It was discovered that some vaccine recipients had developed Covidtoe.

It could be triggered by the exact same immune response as that which sets off. “Covid arm”This is a common side effect of inflammation, and can cause a red rash or other skin reactions.

Prof Freeman said the Washington Post in April: “We have been seeing other types of post-vaccine skin reactions on different parts of the body, in addition to rashes on the inoculated arm.

“These reactions are unusual and generally mild, and typically resolve on their own or with over-the-counter treatment.

“Even though skin reactions to a vaccine can look scary, most are not severe or long-lasting, and show us that your body likely is developing a nice strong immune response to the vaccine, which is a good thing.”

Experts say the random side effects is offset by cold weather, but it’s not clear why.

In a scientific paper Prof Freeman co-authored this article. Experts say the symptoms are similar in nature to pernio, chilblains and other cold-related itchy red swellings.

These conditions can occur when blood vessels are retracted by cold.

“It [Covid toes] doesn’t happen in the summer,”Beth Drolet is professor and chair of dermatology in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

“The toes can stay blue for weeks, but eventually go back to normal”She replied,

Covid toes are a rare skin reaction.

It was reported eight times in a list of 443 skin conditions following the mRNA vaccine.

Other skin complaints that dermatologists have reported include hives and measles-like reactions, herpes flareups, hives and a full body rash, similar to pityriasis.

Covid toes were less common after the second dose of the booster shot than they were the first.

Massachusetts General Hospital allergists found that almost 22% of 49,197 jabbed patients reported skin reactions. This makes side effects extremely rare.

Prof Freeman believes that the condition could be linked to alpha interferon production, which is an inflammatory protein made from white blood cells.

According to her, this is the reason for Covid toes in people naturally infected by the virus.

Others say it’s because the skin has ACE2 receptors, and the Covid spike protein – whether through infection or vaccination – binds to those receptors.

Researchers who looked at 50 participants with Covid toes and 13 with similar chilblains lesions said in both conditions, the body generated an immune response with high levels of certain autoantibodies.

They mistakenly target and respond to the invading viruses’ cells and tissues, as well as their own cells.

Sun columnist Dr Zoe Williams said having side effects to a vaccine is actually a good thing.

“It doesn’t mean you are seriously infected, it means your immune system is kicking in and is primed to jump at the first sign of a Covid infection,”She said.
