Wallis Simpson: Who were you? Season 5: Tragic character returns To The Crown

One of the most controversial moments in royal history happened when Edward VIII abdicated the throne for the woman he loved – Wallis Simpson.

The Crown already covered the story in its initial seasons. Seasons one and two showed the effects of King Edward’s abdication of the throne. Alex Jennings portrayed Edward as he took on the role of Duke at Windsor. Lia Williams played Simpson, his wife.

Season three changed actors as the show explored the Duke’s final days. Derek Jacobi played Edward, while Geraldine Chaplin joined Simpson.

Season five explores the story further and includes flashbacks that show the Duke and Duchess together. As well as including their relationship with Sydney Johnson- the duke’s personal valet.

The fifth season of The Crown explores Simpson’s final days, featuring her funeral and exploring the pain she experienced in the years leading up to her death.

Simpson died 14 years after her husband’s death in April 1986. After Edward’s abdication, the two had lived outside the UK, first in New York and then in Paris.

They were not granted any royal duties and lived separately from the Royal Family.

Simpson remained in bed until then.

Simpson was without a husband and had no family support. She turned to Suzanne Blum, her French lawyer.

Hugo Vickers, in anMailOnline article, Blum allegedly took advantage of the duchess’ weak physical state.

Without permission, it’s claimed she sold jewelry from Simpson’s Multimillion-pound collectionLove letters between the Duke and Duchess published Hello Magazine.

Vickers claimed Blum was in control of the Duchess, and who could see her. She discouraged visitors, claiming that they made Simpson uncomfortable. “flustered”.

Simpson passed away after a long and difficult battle with her illness. Before she was later buried at Windsor Castle, Simpson had a memorial service in Paris. Blum died in 1994.

The Queen Mother was present at the funeral, but she did not attend the burial. The burial was attended by other members of the royal family including Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh and others.
