Unveiling the Mystery: Taylor Swift Drops 6 Clues in “Tortured Poets Department” About Matty Healy, Not Ex Joe Alwyn

Is Taylor Swift’s New Album About Matty Healy? Fans Think So!

The highly anticipated new Taylor Swift album is out now, and contrary to what many expected, fans now think several of the songs are aimed at Matty Healy instead of Joe Alwyn. The Tortured Poets Department was marketed as a break-up album from the start, and given the pop star’s recent split from her boyfriend of six years, many assumed it would be about him.

The Tortured Poets Department: A Closer Look

In particular, the titular song The Tortured Poets Department was thought to be about their public break-up. Joe is known to have opened up to Variety about a group chat he has with fellow actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott called the ‘Tortured Man Club’. Swifties assumed the second track was referencing this – but one hardcore fan has now come out with the six clues she noticed that indicate it is actually about Taylor’s even more recent rocker ex.

Clue #1: The Typewriter Connection

Firstly, she pointed to the lyric that says “You left your typewriter at my apartment”. The listener shared that the 1975 frontman Matty is known for having a love of typewriters, and also uses them on stage during gigs. It also seems realistic that he would leave one at her flat, given he was reported to have left guitar effect pedals, audio interfaces, and his MacBook there while the pair were dating.

Clue #2: The Chocolate Reference

The Swiftie also believes the line “you smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate” links back to the 1975’s song “Chocolate” – which is a euphemism for marijuana. She also pointed out that Matty is Taylor’s only ex who is known to have smoked regularly.

Clue #3: The Charlie Puth Connection

Thirdly, in the song Taylor mentions praising American singer Charlie Puth with a partner. Matt Healy has been a fan of the songwriter since 2018 and publicly promoted his music on Twitter.

Clue #4: The Tattoo Mention

Another lyric references the love interest having tattoos. Matty has a sleeve on one arm and was also inked on his chest, legs, ankle, and even his lip. In contrast, Joe Alwyn has no visible tattoos.

Clue #5: The Friendship References

Finally, one major hint was the pop singer singing: “Sometimes I wonder if you’re gonna screw this up with me but you told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave and I said that to Jack about you so I felt seen”. The Swiftie pointed out that Taylor and Matty were both friends with Lucy Dacus and Jack Antonoff, so she could have been referencing them.

By delving into these clues, it’s clear why fans are speculating that Taylor Swift’s new album may be about Matty Healy after all.
