The feature is called Extreme Battery Saver and it’s designed for when you need as much battery life as possible. It’s an extra level above Standard Battery Saver, which already limits apps and features.

Getting Started with Extreme Battery Saver Mode

With Extreme Battery Saver, your phone will also pause most apps, turn off more features, and slow processes. However, it won’t turn off essential system features like your Phone, Messages, Clock, and Settings apps.

In an official Google memo, the tech giant notes that it can “help your phone last up to 72 hours”. This is in stark contrast to the usual 24 hours that you might expect.

The memo quotes one Google Pixel phone owner who had to use the feature while out searching for a lost dog in the woods. The user was quoted as saying: “My Pixel phone was a trouper! It kept going strong.”

Activating Extreme Battery Saver Mode

For a start, you’ll need to make sure you’re using the right Android phone. Google explains: “On your Pixel 3 or later phone, including Fold, you can save even more power with Extreme Battery Saver.

Extreme Battery Saver lets Battery Saver turn off more features, pause most apps, and slow processing for even more time between charges.

To activate it, just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Extreme Battery Saver. You can also choose which apps are allowed to still run with Extreme Battery Saver active.

For the biggest savings, you’ll want to only allow the most critical apps. To tweak this list, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Extreme Battery Saver > Essential Apps.

Google Pixel Battery Tips

When you turn Extreme Battery Saver mode on, most of the apps on your phone will pause. It’s possible to unpause specific apps if you really need to use them.

Here are some official Google Pixel battery tips to maximize your battery life:

  • Let the phone close apps you’re not using
  • Keep your phone and apps up to date to improve battery efficiency
  • Turn down the brightness and consider using Dark theme for less power consumption
  • Identify power-hungry apps and activities to optimize battery usage

Tap on a paused app and then you’ll be given the option to Unpause Temporarily. This will unpause the app until the next time that you decide to use Extreme Battery Saver.
