A BRAND new Guinness Brewery is honoring its Irish heritage with a St. Patrick’s Day event filled with Instagram-worthy moments.
Experience the St. Patrick’s Day Festivities at the Guinness Brewery
Starting the week before St. Patrick’s Day, the Guinness Pub will offer a celebration that is 260 years in the making. The VIP at OGB event includes a massive block party on March 16 and 17 from 11 am to 10 pm. Other events include a three-hour session where travelers and their friends can enjoy classic brews and other Irish fare, all while getting an inside look at the brand-new spot. The St. Patrick’s Day event will be soundtracked with live music played by DJs who are located both indoors and outdoors. If getting a picture of Chicago’s green river isn’t Instagram-worthy enough, the pub will have photo booths and decorations that will look great on any visitor’s next post. People can also personalize their pints with a printed selfie that sticks to a Guinness and can attend the Perfect Pint Academy where they learn the six-step process of pouring beer. Exclusive merchandise will also be sold at the event. Those in a larger group of four, six, or 12 people should consider reserving a table in the harp room, barrel room, or enclosed patio. Everyone else can expect to get a table on a first come first serve basis, which means waiting outside in a line before your time slot could be worth it. The events will be taking place at various times until March 17.
Visit Chicago’s Iconic Green River
To commemorate St. Patrick’s Day, the Chicago River is dyed Kelly green every year. The river is dyed on the morning of the St. Patrick’s Day parade, which takes place the Saturday before the holiday. It takes about 45 minutes for the green color to reach its electric shade. The tradition was started as a solution to identifying leaky pipes in the city’s infrastructure. But in 1962, representatives of Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130 made it a tradition when they chose to dump dye in the waters for the Irish holiday. The exact mixture of the dye is unknown but it is plant-based and only requires approximately 40 pounds of powdered dye. For other festive events, visitors are invited to hang around the full block party which takes place from Saturday to Sunday between Peoria and Hubbard Streets.
