While Made in Abyss will likely be renewed for season 3, it is possible that the anime return may be delayed due to the manga content.
There have been a few standout shows on the 2022 Summer anime broadcasting slate, with arguably the best of the bunch being the HiDive simulcast exclusive of Made in Abyss’ second season.
Today, fans from around the world are now counting down to the season 2 conclusion of Studio Kinema Citrus’ hit series, set to be a one-hour long finale titled “Gold”.
Ahead of the season 2 finale, Made in Abyss season 3 has not yet been publicly confirmed and unfortunately, whilst a renewal is highly likely, it could be several years before a release date is shared – here’s why.
Made in Abyss Season 3 renewal is an easy decision
Studio Kinema Citrus is yet to renew Made in Abyss’ season 3. However, it appears that the anime series will likely continue in a third broadcast.
This is because the adaptation of the manga is still being made, and the TV series has been one of the most watched of the year. Per AnimeGeek, the season 2 finale is expected to adapt up until volume 10 chapter 60 of Akihito Tsukushi’s original series.
There are now 11 complete Tankobon volumes. PubliziertIn Japan, the series continues to release new chapters on an irregular basis. Tsukushi, however, is known for releasing new chapters only when they are complete, as opposed to a regular schedule, like many manga titles.

This makes Made in Abyss one of the most rated anime in 2022 SummerNot only is it the broadcasting slate but also the third-highest-rated anime in the year!
This is particularly impressive considering Made in Abyss 2 season 2 was simulcast internationally via HiDive, an international platform that is significantly smaller than Crunchyroll.
HiDive will, however, be trying to continue its amazing success on the 2022 summer anime broadcasting slate. The platform is expected to seek out funding/licensing many of their simulcast shows if they return for a second season to help build an international community.
Sadly, there is one major catch that Made in Abyss fans need to understand ahead of the season 3 renewal status…
The Made in Abyss 3 season release date could take years
Studio Kinema Citrus is almost certain to greenlight Made in Abyss Season 3 but it could take several years for a third installment.
As previously noted, Made in Abyss’ season 2 episode 12 finale is expected to cover up until volume 10 of the original manga series, but only 11 complete volumes have been published as of September 2022.
Instead of releasing chapters on a regular schedule, author Akihito Takushi releases them individually when the next instalment is complete.

Studio Kinema Citrus must wait for enough source material to be published, most likely another 4 volumes before they can work on Made in Abyss season 3, which is frustrating.
Overall, based on the current release cycle for published manga content, it’s a realistic prediction that Made in Abyss season 3 won’t release until 2025 – and that’s at the earliest.

The good news is that if you can’t possibly wait for Made in Abyss season 3, you can start reading the original manga series in the meantime.
Ten volumes were published in English as of September 2022. Volume 11 will be released in April 2023 by Seven Seas Entertainment.
