In 2010, Petr Harmáček initiated the groundbreaking “Despecialized Edition” project, which aimed to create new edits of the original Star Wars trilogy using various sources. As a result, subsequent initiatives have been undertaken to restore the original cuts using authentic 35mm film prints, color adjustments, and other innovative techniques.
Project 4k77: A Leap into Modern Technology
The most notable progress in this journey can be attributed to Project 4k77, which commenced in 2016 with the utilization of original film print scans to produce a version of the initial “Star Wars” cut that would be visually compatible with modern 4k screens. Upon its completion, 4k77 yielded a finished product that closely resembles the authentic artifact. Subsequently, the devoted group of fans known as Team Negative 1 then embarked on Project 4k83 and 4k80, dedicated to restoring “Return of the Jedi” and “The Empire Strikes Back,” respectively.
The Historical Significance and Legal Conundrum
These meticulously crafted projects have been widely lauded for their historical significance. Many enthusiasts argue that, regardless of one’s stance on George Lucas’ alterations, it is imperative to have access to the original cuts for historical and preservation purposes. However, due to the fact that these projects are fan-led and lack the approval of Lucasfilm, the legality surrounding them remains uncertain.
