UN ‘deeply disturbed’Thousands were arrested during protests
The UN expressed concern Tuesday over credible reports of almost 2,400 arrests in Russia in less than a week for protests against President Vladimir Putin’s draft.
“We are deeply disturbed by the large number of people who have reportedly been arrested,”Ravina Shamdasani (UN rights office spokesperson) told reporters in Geneva.
Russian authorities have taken steps to silence criticism of the war against Ukraine. They have detained thousands of protestors since February, when the conflict began.
Since Putin’s announcement last Wednesday of a partial military mobilization to help bolster Ukrainian troops, the number of arrests has risen.
Shamdasani pointed out “credible reports (that) some 2,377 demonstrators had been arrested… in various locations across the country”.
“It is unclear how many people remain in detention,”She spoke.
