Producer Jerry Bruckheimer believes that Tom Cruise’s latest film is a success because of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During an interview, the legendary producer shared his thoughts with Entertainment Weekly. He acknowledged how popular Marvel Comics and DC are with moviegoers, but suggested to us that some people may be looking for practical effects. He puts it this way:
The Marvel stuff is loved by the audiences as much as the DC stuff. These are beautifully designed by very talented people. Sometimes you want to see something that’s real, and that’s what Top Gun gave us… These aviators are out there protecting our country right now, flying around the world, and you’re taking a ride with them. You’re witnessing their work, what it’s like to live it, and the trials that they go through. You’re actually experiencing it with our actors.’
Jerry Bruckheimer most likely refers to the growing use of CGI in movies from Marvel Studios and other studios, which is quite different from previous films. Maverick: Top Gun’s commitment to practical effects. For many scenes in the movie, real fighter jets were used. Tom Cruise and crew went through intensive flight training to be able to perform many of these sequences. Miles Teller, who was involved in the intense action scenes, admitted to vomiting due to the extreme g force created by the plane stunts.
Jerry Bruckheimer suggests that audiences might need to take a break from CGI-heavy films and were attracted to Top Gun: Maverick’s more grounded approach. The film’s use of practical effects could have evoked the old filmmaking methods and even inspired a nostalgia response in the audience.

This is especially due to the rapid growth in streaming services. However, the long-awaited sequel certainly defied all odds, becoming an instant success that can’t seem to stop making money.
